ELEMENTARY ENGAGEMENT GUIDE

WORD OF THE DAY:

Ozone is a gas. It is a form of oxygen. The ozone makes a shield around the Earth to protect us from harmful rays created by the sun, but lets the light from the sun still shine through. This shield is about 15 miles above the Earth’s surface.

HEALTHY SNACK:

Did you know that foods like almonds are rich in Vitamin E play a major role in protecting the lungs from the harmful pollution-ridden air? Try to include this healthy  snack into your diet!

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons honey

2 cups roasted unsalted almonds

¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Scant ½ teaspoon cayenne

¼ cup sesame seeds

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Place 2 tablespoons honey in a small, microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup and microwave for 15 seconds. In a large bowl, mix the honey with the remainder of the ingredients.

Place the mixture on a parchment covered baking sheet and roast for 10 minutes. Allow to cool fully, then gently break apart the almonds. Store in an airtight container.

CHALLENGE OF THE DAY:

This week’s challenge is to create a poster showing all the ways you can help protect the earth’s shield.  Be sure to use bright colors. Have fun and don’t forget to share your final poster with your BGC family.
