September 1st is “American Chess Day”
Chess is a game of strategy and skill that is played all over the world by both young and old. To play, two opponents face off across a checkers-style board, and take turns using their pieces of kings, queens, rooks, knights, bishops, and pawns to move along the 64-square board. Game times vary — great players can knock out their opponents very quickly or can spend hours strategizing their every move. To win, a player must use his pieces to capture those of the other player, with the ultimate goal of taking over the other player’s king. Checkmate! Often called “The Game of Kings.”
Now more than ever, it is important to create a safe, supportive and inclusive environment at school and at home. This program provides opportunities and experiences to practice social emotional development, specifically empathy for others.
Today Ms. Philecia will like you to explore your community for treasure. Everybody brings something of value – a treasure – to the community. Getting to know others who are different from us is an important because the diversity of our community is what makes it an interesting and exciting place to live.
Use this Passport outline to identify the treasures in your community.
Community member: (What business did you go to and who did you speak to?)
Diversity category: (What is diverse about this business?)
Treasure: (How has this business helped the community?)
