ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

September 10, 1982 Misty Copeland was born!

Misty Copeland put on her first pair of ballet shoes in a Boys & Girls Club at the age of 13 in San Pedro, California.

In 2015, she became the first African-American woman to be named principal dancer in the 75-year history of American Ballet Theater. Misty is an advocate for Boys & Girls Clubs America, often mentioning her experience at the Club in interviews and special events.

IT'S A CELEBRATION:

We observe World Suicide Prevention Day each year on September 10. Every 40 seconds someone takes their own life according to the World Health Organization (WHO). That’s about 800,000 people worldwide every year.  Suicide is the leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 29 and for every suicide that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted suicides.

BRAIN TEASER:

It’s raining at midnight. Will there be sunny weather in 72 hours?

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT:

With the world vastly advancing in technology, jobs like coding are very high in demand. Challenge your computer intelligence with this week’s Program Highlight, Computer Science!

Coding: the process of designing and building an executable computer program to accomplish a specific computing result or to perform a specific task.

When you look at a computer’s programming code it may look nothing like English and that’s because the coder has written it using a special language. Today you will be that coder. Create a word or phrase using your unique coding method and have someone try to decipher it. Here’s one you can try on yourself before getting starting.\

DAILY CHALLENGE:

Resilience!

7Cs of Resilience

All of us are trying to find ways of making it though the day especially during this crazy time in our world. Take a moment to view videos made by teens for teens that share different ideas on how to be the best version of ourselves even when everything around us doesn’t make sense. Learn about the 7Cs of Resilience (coping, control, contribution, character, competence, connection and confidence) and learn that taking care of yourself makes all of the difference!
