Youth of the Year Annual Recognition Dinner

One teen member will be named the local Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain and receive a $3,000 scholarship. The newly named Youth of the Year will next compete against other Boys & Girls Clubs members across North Carolina for the state title and an additional $1,000 college scholarship. State winners move on to compete for the distinction as one of five regional winners across the country and ultimately those five winners will contend for the title of National Youth of the Year.

Winterville, NC – Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain is pleased to announce the selection of its first Chief Financial Officer, Carrie Dale Purnell. Carrie specializes in leadership, accounting, finance, budgeting & planning and internal controls. Carrie is a graduate of NC State University where she obtained both her MAC and BS in Accounting. Carrie Dale has held roles with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Piedmont Natural Gas, and Deloitte & Touche, most recently she served as CFO of LGM Enterprises, LLC. She is excited and energized to be working with BGCCP and she is looking forward to supporting the vision of inspiring and preparing the next generation of leaders in Eastern North Carolina.

Kimberly Boyd, President & CEO, says, “Organizationally we have grown exponentially in the past few years and we are in need of in-house expertise to effectively and efficiently leverage the resources that have been entrusted to us on behalf of more that 3,000 young people. Carrie Dale brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and we are thrilled to have her join our team.”

Craven Arts Council helps Boys & Girls Club Teen Center create new motivational mural

On Friday, December 6th our New Bern Teen Center members along with members of the Craven Arts Council unveiled the Club mural dedicated to the City of New Bern and the staff of the Boys & Girls Club!

The mural depicts Club members being surrounded and supported by the New Bern community and staff of the Club. The Boys & Girls Club Logo represents our Club members, the bear on the right side represents the supporters and donors in our community, and the faces on the left side represent the caring staff members at the Club.

Thanks to a collaborative effort and the guidance of the Craven Arts Council Gallery Director, Jonathan Burger, our New Bern teen member were given the opportunity to help create the mural. On the day of the mural unvieling, Art Council and Club members took the opportunity to sign their names on the wall. The Club members also presented Mr. Jonathan and members of the Arts Council with thank you cards they created!

Duke Energy Donates $20,000 to Local Youth

Winterville, NC – Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain received a grant from Duke Energy on June 19 to help support the summer program, Summer Brain Gain. The $20,000 check was hand delivered to the Club kids by Duke Energy Government & Community Relations Manager, Millie Chalk. “Duke Energy is focused on trying to build and support our communities in any number of ways, whether it is through education, work-force development or environmental, trying to find all those different niches that can make a difference in the community. Boys & Girls Clubs is the perfect niche for us because those are our future leaders and future employees. We are hoping to build a partnership that not only strengthens Boys & Girls Clubs but also strengthens our organization and communities as well.”

This grant will aid with Club programs during the summer, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain implements a program called Summer Brain Gain. Summer Brain Gain is comprised of one-week modules with fun, themed activities for elementary school, middle school and high school students that are aligned with common core state standards. Each module takes a project-based learning approach: youth engage in a process of learning through discovery, creative expression, group work and create a final project or production. As a result, kids develop higher-order thinking skills while staying on track for the coming school year. Winterville, NC – The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain is proud to announce that Board Member, Steve Stevenson, III received the “Jeremiah Milbank National Gold Medallion Award” at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) 2019 National Conference. This award is granted to those professionals who continue to support and dedicate their time to our local youth. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain President & CEO, Kimberly Boyd, stated” “Steve’s tireless dedication to the well-being of youth is unparralled and we are so grateful for his efforts every day. We are so pleased to be able to honor him at this level.”

Lorene Jackson Receives National Award at Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Conference

Winterville, NC – Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain Chief Development Officer, Lorene Jackson, was awarded the 2019 Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) Masters & Mentors Award at the BGCA 2019 National Conference in Houston, Texas.

The Masters & Mentors Award honors Club professionals who have shown a commitment to professional growth and the highest degree of competency and performance. Formerly National Vice President at Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Lorene has over 20 years of experience in youth development nonprofits and programming. Kimberly Boyed, President & CEO for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain only had great things to say about Lorene. “Lorene has a distinguished career serving our nation’s youth and we are privileged to have her here. She has a legacy of not only leading great programs for youth, but also in developing great leaders. This esteemed honor is well deserved.”

Winterville, NC – Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain is happy to announce the selection of its new Chief Development Officer, Lorene Jackson effective August 1, 2018. Lorene has over 20 years of Boys & Girls Club experience in youth development and quality programming. She offers a history of proven results in the Boys & Girls Clubs Movement at the local, state and national levels. She is a skilled leader who prides herself in developing high performing teams and is an outstanding relationship manager.

Lorene is a graduate of Concordia University with a Masters of Art in Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from University of Tennessee. Formerly National Vice President at Boys & Girls Clubs of America, she also served at the national level in Government Relations, focused on procuring federal and state support for organizations across the Southeast. She is a proven leader through her history of working with nonprofits focused on underprivileged youth.

Winterville, NC – Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain is happy to announce the selection of its new President & CEO, Kimberly Boyd effective March 1, 2018. Kimberly has nearly 30 years of experience in youth development and quality programming. Her background in community engagement and resource development align perfectly with the organization. She is a devoted and passionate advocate for kids and their well-being.

Kimberly is a graduate of Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Masters of Social Work from The University of Pittsburgh. She is a proven leader through her history of working with nonprofits and underprivileged youth, including time previously spent with Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Jill Camnitz, Corporate Board Chair for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain says, “Kimberly Boyd is the dynamic leader we’ve been looking for to guide our merged organization. We believe that she will lead our organization to a higher level of excellence and impact, making a difference in the lives of the kids who need us most.”
