Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain Announces
Simone Rogers as the 2017 Youth of the Year Winner

Winterville, NC – On Friday, February 9, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain hosted its Youth of the Year Annual Recognition Dinner presented by PNC. Simone Rogers was named Youth of the Year and received a $3,000 college scholarship also made possible by PNC. Simone has been a member of the Havelock Unit since 2013 and is a sophomore at Havelock High School where she is a member of Beta Club. At the Havelock Unit, she participates in Keystone Club, Smart Moves, Junior Staff and Fine Arts Program.

Six other Youth of the Year finalists participated in the dinner: Kevin Moore, Jr. representing Beaufort County; Taeler Godby representing Carteret County; Madia Harris representing Greene County, Emmanual Blount representing Lenoir County; Alyssa Cobb representing Martin County; and Dai-Shon Donald representing Pitt County.

K&W Cafeterias provided dinner for the 200 guests in attendance. In addition to recognizing outstanding youth, 2017 Circle of Champions members were honored. Circle of Champions members are individuals and businesses that support Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain with annual contributions of $5,000 and $10,000 respectively.

“The Youth of the Year program is a wonderful opportunity for us to recognize the accomplishments and attributes of our young people. Simone is a shining example of the academic success, healthy lifestyles, and good character and citizenship that we strive to help all of our members achieve. We are so proud of her and the other young people who participated in the Youth of the Year program,” stated Kirk Dominick, Interim President & CEO for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. As Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier youth recognition program, the Youth of the Year title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. Each state winner is awarded a $1,000 college scholarship and five regional winners a $10,000 scholarship. The national winner receives an additional scholarship up to $50,000 and is installed by the President of the United States.

The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. There are 17 Clubs throughout Pitt, Beaufort, Lenoir, Martin, Greene, Carteret, and Craven Counties serving approximately 1,300 members daily and 3,600 annually. Continuing Commitment to Youth Protection

Winterville, NC – BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE COASTAL PLAIN CONTINUES STRONG COMMITMENT TO YOUTH PROTECTION

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain announces the adoption of a new youth protection program and partnership with Praesidium, the national leader in abuse risk management. Club Care, Praesidium’s abuse prevention program specifically designed for Boys & Girls Clubs, exceeds the latest industry standards for youth protection and supports [Club Name’s] current efforts to keep members safe from harm and help them develop to their full potential. “Child sexual abuse is a very real danger in our society and I want our parents to know our commitment and dedication to proactively protecting those in our care,” said Donyell Jones.

Club Care includes rigorous training for volunteers and staff, comprehensive abuse prevention policies, and youth education curriculum for our members. Jordy Whichard says, “We are pleased to send the message that we will not compromise the safety of the youth in our Club for any reason.”
